Can you describe what is considered as modern kebaya?
The modern kebaya is known as Baju Kebaya Pendek - the hemline of the short tunic ends around the hip. It has an opening in front and is normally fastened with brooches. Kebaya Pendek is worn over a batik sarung with the decorative back of the panel sarung folded in front. This Kebaya Pendek was known also as Baju Bandung at one point in time, referring to the origin of the Kebaya from the city of Bandung in Indonesia. It was adapted to incorporate features then in vogue with the fashion from the west. This included the introduction of a row of buttons to fasten the tunic instead of using the normal brooches. Other features introduced were puffed, cuffed sleeves, three quarter sleeves and flaired sleeves. Today, the adaptations of the kebaya also follow current fashion trends.

Could you say something about the differences between modern and nyonya kebaya?
A Nyonya Kebaya could also be viewed as a 'modern' kebaya - it is the embroidery that differentiates it.
